Summertime nostalgia (do you remember...?)

Do you remember...
  • Enjoying the heat of the sun without being consumed by infant sunburn worries? Without chasing the midday shade, slapping everyone in Factor 50 and constantly re-positioning the sunhat your baby seems to have real beef with. The baby who incidentally is Max Branning ginger strawberry blonde and really needs to wear the bastard sunhat.
  • Fortnights abroad where your biggest dilemma was which magazine to buy for the plane and how many bikinis to pack?
  • Sunbathing with your EYES SHUT at the beach without being on Red Alert for unacceptable sand-throwing behaviour and/or kidnapping?
  • Devouring a grown-up ice cream like a magnum in its entirety and not having to donate it to your toddler who has dropped the bottom third of his Rocket?
  • Having a 'summer wardrobe' HA HA HA and nicely tanned legs with the help of Dove Summer Glow?
  • Going out for a nice cold drink after work? On occasions finding that "just the one" had snowballed into a dirty 3am kebab?
  • Popping anywhere on a WHIM (a whim!) to make the most of the weather, without having to drag along a pram/change bag/array of plastic tat, plus charming but slightly shitty-tempered children?
  • Enjoying a sophisticated lunch al fresco, possibly reading something that isn't Each Peach Pear Plum? [Tom Thumb in the cupboard, I spy Mother about to lose some serious shit if she has to find the fucking bears again Hubbard].
  • Talking to friends at a BBQ? You know, conversation. About real stuff not related to the four month sleep regression and/or reward charts? Chat uninterrupted by the tantrum over BBQ food (because he asked for ketchup but now he HATES ketchup and the hotdog without ketchup isn't any better because HE WANTED KETCHUP).

No, me neither.

The Unmumsy Mum

[Enjoying a cold glass of wine whilst dancing around the kitchen to songs from the early noughties. Got a MARS ice-cream in the freezer for later. That'll do. Happy Friday y'all].

  1. After just returning from two weeks in Corfu which was probably more stressful than normal life, this post captures it completely!

  6. We're just back from holiday and i have full blown tonsillitis - the doc said i must be run down. So much for holidays being about relaxing! My 2 yr old clocked that the pool and the beach had ice cream sellers and had monster tantrums repeatedly, even when he'd just had an ice cream. It will get easier....

  7. My first holiday with a baby (4 years ago) was a shock. Now it's the norm...

  10. Yes! This. I have a beach wardrobe that hasn't seen the light of day for 3 years. My oldest son is nearly 3. There's a definite correlation.

  14. After some advice from a friend with 3 kids under 4yrs old who had just come back we decided not to bother when she told us to think of a suitable WWF tag team name as the high five you give your hubby as you take over 'the watch' will be the closest thing to intimacy you get!

  15. I had similar thoughts to you on a recent family holiday where I spent most of the time stopping my little one from eating sand whilst looking enviously at carefree child free couples relaxing and enjoying cocktails. Wouldn't change it though!

  16. Someone told me that a holiday with a toddler is just survival in a different environment. Very true!

  17. Currently on 'holiday' with my 5, 4 and 1 year old boys... Have come to the conclusion that the more children you have, the greater the likelihood that one of them will be crying at any given time, day or night!

  18. Yeah, holidays with toddlers are trying! I was the only one to get sunburnt as my sun lotion melted then got ear ache, a tooth infection and thrush on arriving home. Still helped me quit breastfeeding after 20 months... every cloud has a silver lining. (She says as she laughs hysterically at the ever increasing weighs on the scales.)
